When moving SharePoint, there must be a scheduled stop on any data updates.

Moving SharePoint from one Tenant to another is a straight forward operaton. We at San Diego Computer Consulting can your more SharePoint data from one Office 365 Tenant to another. This is often required, when there is a migration of a domain from one tenant to another. When moving SharePoint data, we use our tools to migrate all the SharePoint data via the cloud. When making a migraiton and move, there cannot be any changes in SharePoint as those changes will not come over.

SharePoint Migration Explained

Moving SharePoint from Tenant to Tenat is a startight forward operation. The data will migration from library to library, but user rights will NOT move.

When implmenting a SharePoint tenant to tenant migration, each of the libraries will move over. The SharePoint in the destination must be provisioned for adequate storeage before the migration. This can be done by doing an inventory scan to ensure that each library is lean. Further, we must ensure that each library has less than 100,000 files. This is a SharePoint limitation. Lastly, it is important that the library subfolders do not reacy the file path length.

SharePoint can be very touchy about file and path length. It is also touchy about library size. In order for SharePoint to work quickly and well, it must be streamlined to ensure that the the library is well within its limitations. When doing a migration from tenant to tenant this is a good time to do an assement to ensure viability.

Path Size Limits

Microsoft limits the number of characters in a path to not exceed 400 characters. This is the full path limit, not just the file name. We have to ensure there are no path sizes that are larger than 400 or the migration will not work properly.

Timeline & Delta

When doing a SharePoint migraiton, the migration from begining to end must be at a time when there are NO updates or changes to the current site. The migration does not do a post synchronization. The migration must be done at a specific stoppage of time. From beging to end there must be no changes on the current SharePoint site.

Permissions

All users and groups included in the identity mapping file that you uploaded to the target tenant will maintain permissions in the target tenant related to the migrated OneDrive site.

Legal holds

OneDrive accounts with a Hold policy applied will be blocked from migration. To migrate these OneDrive accounts, remove the hold policy, migrate, then reapply the hold as needed on the target tenant.

Shared files

After a OneDrive account is migrated, anyone clicking on a shared link to the old location will be redirected to the new one, provided they still have access to the destination.

Those redirects remain until the source tenant is deprovisioned. The admin can also selectively remove redirects site-by-site.

We use Mover IO for all our moving and migration projects. Mover is a powerful tool that allows us to move data sets and librarys over to SharePoint. Mover is a tool from Microsoft designed to import data from any cloud shared drive to SharePoint. Mover specializes in moving Amazon S3, Box, Dropbox, Google Drive all to SharePoint. Some Google Drive native files will be converte to a supported file format. However, not all Googles content is compatible.

When doing a Cloud platform to SharePoint migration, the user rights of the folders and libraries will NOT move over. This has to be re-created manually on the SharePoint side.

The conversion process is very complex as we have stated. It is complex because we are migrating IMAP which is an technology. Migrating Gmail to Office 365 is a specialized process in which we have to set very specific data sets and rights to those data sets between Bit Titan and Google. We are able to setup a specific trust through a set of settings that bridges the data set between Microsoft and Google. Once the trust data set bridge is set, then we are able to do a full migration of data. This includes email, contacts, calendar, tasks. With the help of Mover IO we are able to move cloud libraries to SharePoint.
