Cloud Computing Explained
Fast, Simple, Limitless
Cloud computing today is very easy and simple with Microsoft’s Terminal Server technology. With Microsoft Terminal Sever, a computer can connect via anywhere on the Internet and connect directly to the office server. Once connected, you can run any software that is on the office server. This is much like a Mainframe talks to a ‘dumb terminal,’ except that today the dumb terminal is a windows desktop screen. Simply put, you get a desktop of the Terminal Server computer on top of your Windows, XP, Vista, or 7 computer. The desktop however, is from the remote Terminal Server.
Why Is Cloud Computing Fast?
Cloud Computing is very fast because the applications run directly on the server and not remotely on your computer. So, when you run a program, it only sends the screen shots to the remote session/desktop. For example, if you have QuickBooks on the Terminal Server, when you load QuickBooks, it is very fast because it is running locally and it can bring up the data file very quickly on the server. However, what you see on your local computer is what looks like QuickBooks locally, but it is really running from the server.
Microsoft Remote Desktop
The most popular Cloud Computing implementation is Microsoft Remote Desktop which is built into all Windows computers. Using Remote Desktop is easy in that you remote to the Terminal Server, and get a full Windows desktop from the remote computer. Using Remote Desktop allows you to access all you remote programs on your Terminal Server in the same screen.
Microsoft Remote Application
Built into Server 2008
Very simply, remote application by Microsoft is a very simple and easy implantation of Cloud Computing. This option allows you to send a icon of an installed program on a Terminal Server and run the program simply by clicking on it. The program then just loads remotely over the Internet and runs as if it was local on your computer.
